Big News Coming for Criminal Fans...

This week's new issue of The Fade Out is simply fantastic, with especially striking colors from Elizabeth Breitweiser, and we're not the only ones to notice.  Comic Book Round Up has already listed 17 uniformly positive and often glowing reviews.

As much as we're  enjoying the tale that's enfolding before our eyes, we would be remiss not to mention the first rumblings of big news down the road for Brubaker and Phillips.

In the extensive back pages of The Fade Out #2, Ed Brubaker mentions the new editions of Criminal, in  a brief comment that's worth printing in full, following the first new edition's cover art, which we first mentioned two weeks ago.

...speaking of [our] backlist, we heard from a lot of new readers this time, so if you're one of those, please check out our other books.  We have a lot of work in print, and we're just about to begin rereleasing the CRIMINAL books through IMAGE.  In fact, here's the cover (with our new design) for the first one, which will be out in January.
We'll be putting them out one-per-month, from January to June, and we'll have even more CRIMINAL news soon.  (I want to tell you now, I just can't yet.)
To summarize:
  • New editions of Criminal  are coming early next year, published by Image rather than Marvel's Icon imprint, with new cover art for all six volumes, to be released monthly beginning this January,
  • There's even more Criminal news coming soon.
  • As we covered two weeks back, Brubaker announced that he and Phillips are taking a break between arcs on both The Fade Out and Brubaker's spy comic Velvet, because "Me and Sean have a secret thing coming in January."
We don't know more than that, but it's not hard to begin connecting dots.

We can't wait -- and if you're a Criminal fan who didn't read this news first in The Fade Out #2, what are you doing?  Go down to your local comic shop and get caught up on the tawdry tale in Tinseltown, without delay!

Hi. I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but just in case... I've just picked up the great volume 2 of the deluxe edition of Criminal. It's a great book, but has a number of printing errors, like mentioned here: http://marvelmasterworksfansite.yuku.com/reply/584799/Re-Criminal-Deluxe-Edition-Vol-2-printing-error

I'm happy to add the missing words myself, but can't find any list of the errors online. Do you know if there's any list of the mistakes anywhere?

DG, I'm glad you wrote.

The first Criminal Deluxe volume also had at least one error, with some of the text being accidentally duplicated in Gnarly's prose story "Caught in the Undertow."

On the one hand, the printing errors are understandable, at least in the books published by Marvel's Icon imprint: as I understand it, creators are practically self-publishing through Icon, just getting access to Marvel's printers and not their people. I believe Brubaker and Phillips reviewed the proofs without the help of paid, full-time editors.

(Even with a full-time staff, errors slip through. The first trade paperback version of one Gotham Central arc had an entire page without speech bubbles, and I ended up making a color copy of the monthly issue placing it after the messed up page. I believe that the error was corrected with the hardcover series that collected the complete run, but still: ugh.)

On the other hand, it's really annoying that the most expensive, deluxe hardcover treatments of the series have printing errors not found in the monthlies or trade paperbacks. It's one thing for these books to retain the occasional flaw of the originals -- in "Lawless" the character Grey's name is spelled at least two different ways -- and it's another thing entirely to introduce new errors.

I *DO* believe that Brubaker once tweeted that he's more than willing to fill in the missing dialogue personally at conventions, and I hope that the team's new addition of editor David Brothers means that the new editions are given a good once-over.

But, to answer your question, I don't know of any comprehensive errata list for Brubaker and Phillips' books in general, or Criminal in particular.

If I were you, I'd email Ed (criminalcomic at gmail dot com) and ask him.

If there is an official (or unofficial) errata list -- or if you decide to start one -- let us know!

We'd be happy to publicize the list, and I'd almost certainly contribute to it myself.
